A lithium-ion fire doesn't burn the stored electricity. It burns the battery itself — electrolyte, cathode, separator. A full-pack thermal runaway in a large e-bike or scooter can peak at 218,000 BTU/hr, more than a gallon of burning Jet-A. Cells hit 800°C, and the pack makes its own oxygen as it goes.
Thermal runaway also vents hydrogen fluoride gas — colorless, toxic, and corrosive to lungs. FDNY tests documented just 15 seconds from first visible smoke to windows blowing out of a residence.
E-bikes, scooters, hoverboards, power tools, forklifts, golf carts, solar lights. FDNY has logged record years for lithium-caused structure fires. If it has a lithium-ion battery, it has this risk — in every department's first-due area.
